Artist Statement:
The Baptized in Surf Project (Parts I & II)
The Baptized in Surf is a visual testimony to the collision of heritage, holiness, and the heavy weight of the "The cHURCH." This diptych explores the transformative power of the ocean as a space of spiritual reclamation, centered on the journey of the Artist—an urban seeker caught between the rigid dogma of a strict Christian upbringing and the raw, militant reality of the streets.
Part I: The Chaos of the Call
The first piece serves as the "Internal Noise"—a frantic, multi-layered collage of the psyche. It captures the friction of Tony’s world: the graffiti of the urban landscape bleeding into the sacred text of the church.
The Conflict:
Heavy strokes and jagged typography mirror the "SECULAR Thug Tendencies" that wrestle with the desire for Gandhian peace.
The Deconstruction:
Here, the iconography of faith is dismantled and reassembled. It represents the "healing thoughts" that emerge only after surviving the institutional and social pressures of the “Church”. It is the grit before the grace.
Part II: The Sanctuary of the Swell
The second piece is a STamP of transition from the noise of the ChuRcH to the clarity of the SeA. Ant (formerly known as Tony) is called to the “Swell” to be Baptized ( May 1, 2021 @ Cardiff by The Sea) not just as a black surfer, but as a soul in mid-ritual—surrendering to the "Wave." Just as we surrender to “Religion” in the ritual of Baptizism.
The Community:
The integration of logos like the Black Surfers Collective, Black Surfing Association, A Great Day in The Stoke grounds the work in a real-world movement of ancestral reclamation. It honors the "Black Mahatma" spirit, finding liberation in a space historically denied to the community.
Part II: The Sanctuary of the Swell (continued)
The Legacy:
The integration of logos from the Color the Water, Black.Surfers, Paddle for Peace and Wade in the Water represents more than community—it represents a systemic disruption. These BIPOC-led organizations serve as the vanguard against the historical exclusion and racial inequities that have long defined the surf industry and coastal access. By reclaiming the shoreline, these groups provide the concrete "Ant-Tidote" to the "Whites Only" legacy of the surf world.
The Tour-Signatures of Sovereignty:
The final layer of this ritual was a The Tour, a living archive of the movement. The Artist traveled to various Black surf events, bringing the Waves of Distress poster by Shepard Fairey into the heart of the community it represents. Rather than remaining a static piece of art, the poster became a communal canvas.
FINAL WORDS:
The Artist’s surf crew and representatives from the vanguard organizations—like A Great Day in The Stoke, Paddle for Peace, Textured Waves, The Community & many more… —were invited to "tag" the work. These signatures and tags are not mere graffiti; they are testimonies of presence. By marking the Waves of Distress, these surfers transformed a symbol of struggle into a monument of collective triumph. Each stroke of the pen serves as a physical "Ant-Tidote," reclaiming the shoreline and proving that the swell belongs to those who have the courage to paddle out.
